Kolkata, 03 November (H.S.): Police on Monday detained a youth found loitering suspiciously outside the American Center in central Kolkata’s high-security zone on Jawaharlal Nehru Road. The detainee, a resident of North 24 Parganas district, has been taken to Shakespeare Sarani Police Station for questioning.

According to police officials, the youth’s behavior raised suspicion as he was seen roaming repeatedly near the entrance of the diplomatic facility. Security personnel immediately intercepted him and conducted a preliminary search. His mobile phone has been seized for forensic examination to determine the intent behind his presence at the location.

The incident prompted a swift security response due to the sensitive nature of the area. Police said all possible angles are being investigated, and central intelligence agencies have also been alerted.

The American Center in Kolkata has remained under heightened security since January 22, 2002, when motorcycle-borne terrorists opened fire at the premises, killing five people, including four police personnel, and injuring 20 others.

As inquiries continue, police officials have assured that security protocols around the diplomatic facility are being strictly reinforced.
