
Delhi, 3 November (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian women's cricket team on their spectacular and historic victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, calling their performance a display of great skill and confidence. The team secured its maiden World Cup crown by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
In what is being celebrated as a landmark achievement, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team became the first Indian women's side to win a global cricket title. After being put into bat, India posted a formidable total of 298 for 7 in their 50 overs. The innings was powered by a stellar performance from Shafali Verma, who top-scored with 87 runs, and a crucial half-century from Deepti Sharma (58) .
In response, South Africa fought valiantly, led by a magnificent century from their captain, Laura Wolvaardt (101). However, a disciplined Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by Deepti Sharma's record-breaking five-wicket haul (5/39), dismantled the South African batting lineup, bowling them out for 246 in 45.3 overs. Sharma was named Player of the Series for her all-round excellence, while Verma was awarded Player of the Match.
