Police Brutality on the Rise in Kerala

Kochi, 03 November (HS) : Even as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was showering the Kerala Police with encomiums at a function in Kannur, a report about police brutality in Thrissur has hogged the limelight on Monday.

While Vijayan described Kerala Police as the world’s most people friendly law enforcing force while addressing a public function on Monday morning, a report about how the same force assaulted a youth by name Vincent has come from Thrissur.

The incident happened late Sunday night while the youth was standing on the footpath watching a procession held by the local church in connection with the pre-Christmas festival.

“I was asked by a team of cops who were passing through the road in their official vehicle and before I could tell them I was watching the procession, they unleashed a series of blows on me with hands and their lathis,” Vincent told reporters on Monday. He said he has complained to the police superintendent about the high handedness.

Police brutality has become rampant all over Kerala and there are complaints that the law enforcing authorities have become henchmen of the CPI(M).
