New Delhi/Hyderabad , 26 November (H.S.): In a significant boost to India's aviation infrastructure and self-reliance goals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Safran's state-of-the-art aircraft engine Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad.

Addressing the launch from New Delhi via video conference, the Prime Minister declared that the new facility heralds a new era for the Indian aviation sector, positioning the nation as a formidable global MRO hub.The Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) facility, located at the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park, is the first established in India by a leading global engine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

This milestone development is dedicated to servicing LEAP engines, which power the widely used Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft families.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this venture is a symbol of trust in India's talent and a stepping stone for the youth to build a world-class aviation hub within the country.

A Leap Towards Self-RelianceThe establishment of this MRO facility is a major stride in India's Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) mission within the aviation industry. Previously, nearly 85% of India's MRO requirements were met by overseas facilities, leading to increased costs, operational delays, and significant foreign exchange outflow.

By developing indigenous capabilities, the new Safran hub will not only create high-value employment but also fortify supply-chain resilience.Key government policies have been instrumental in creating a conducive environment for such investments. Initiatives like the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016, MRO Guidelines 2021, and GST reforms in 2024 have simplified operations by rationalizing tax structures and reducing royalty burdens for MRO providers.

Economic and Operational ImpactConstructed with an initial investment of approximately Rs 1,300 crore, the expansive 45,000-square-meter facility is poised to make a substantial economic impact. It is designed to service up to 300 LEAP engines annually and is projected to employ over 1,000 highly skilled Indian technicians and engineers by the time it reaches full operational capacity around 2035.

The Prime Minister noted that those investing in India are considered co-creators and vital stakeholders in the nation's journey toward development.
