Washington/Beijing, 25 November (H.S.): US-China Dialogue Recalibrates Bilateral CooperationUS President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping affirmed the strength of US-China relations in a phone conversation on Monday, underscoring renewed momentum following their landmark October summit in South Korea.
President Trump accepted Xi’s invitation to visit Beijing in April 2026, while Xi is scheduled to visit Washington later the same year, signaling a new phase of diplomatic engagement between the world’s two largest economies.
Taiwan and Global Security Take Center Stage
During the call, President Xi stressed the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, referencing its historical importance within the post-World War II international order. He emphasized China’s claim over Taiwan, connecting it to the efforts against fascism and militarism.
The diplomatic row between China and Japan over Taiwan remains unresolved, fueled by new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent statements suggesting potential military intervention in the event of aggression against the island.
While the White House maintains strategic ambiguity, the United States remains Taiwan’s principal partner and arms supplier.
Trade Progress and Rare Earths AgreementThe dialogue followed the October meeting, which established a tentative trade truce addressing rare earths, soybeans, and tariffs. China has pledged to suspend certain export restrictions for one year, ensuring more consistent global access to critical minerals. In turn, Washington will reduce selected tariffs, while Beijing commits to purchasing at least 12 million metric tons of American soybeans this year and 25 million metric tons by 2026. These steps aim to stabilize supply chains, buoy key markets, and foster regulatory clarity.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism about finalizing further agreements by Thanksgiving.Ukraine Conflict and Path to PeaceThe leaders also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
President Xi reiterated his government’s backing for international efforts to achieve peace and called for inclusive and lasting negotiations to resolve the crisis, advocating a solution acceptable to all parties involved.
President Trump reiterated his commitment to ending the war, noting critics’ concerns about concessions to Moscow but emphasizing the United States’ dedication to securing a just resolution.
Forward-Looking Bilateral EngagementChinese officials described the recent South Korea summit as a turning point, helping recalibrate the future trajectory of US-China relations. Both leaders conveyed optimism regarding continued progress, with Xi calling the current path “steady and positive,” a sentiment echoed by President Trump in his statement following their call.
The evolving partnership marks a period of cautious hope amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic challenges.
