
Hooghly, 24 November (H.S.): Tension spread in the Maheshtala area of Chuchura on Monday morning after locals caught a young man allegedly breaking into a locked house. The enraged residents severely beat him and tied him to an electric pole before informing the police
According to locals, there had been a spate of thefts in the area for the past few days. On Monday morning, a young man broke into a locked house. No one was inside at the time. The accused began breaking into a cupboard, but neighbors woke up and ran towards the house. Seeing the neighbors approaching, the young man tried to hide. Locals suspect someone else was with him, who fled the scene. Some cash, a key, and a sharp weapon were recovered from the pocket of the arrested young man.
As per information, there have been several previous thefts in empty houses in the area. This time, when he was caught red-handed, people became enraged and beat him up. He was then tied to an electric pole and the police were informed. The police from Chuchura police station arrived at the scene, rescued the young man from the mob and detained him. The police are now trying to determine why and with whom he was there. Following the incident, residents of Maheshtala have demanded increased police patrolling in the area to prevent thefts.
Meanwhile, in an another case of mob thrasing on suspicion of theft, a young man died in the Ambazar area of Englishbazar in Malda. The deceased's name was Shamjan Sheikh. The deceased's wife has filed a murder case at Englishbazar police station. The police have so far arrested three people.
