East Medinipur, 24 November (H.S.): The body of a young man who went missing two days ago at Mandarmani beach was found entangled in a fishermen's net on Monday morning. On information, police from Mandarmani Coastal Police Station arrived at the scene and sent the body for autopsy. This incident has once again raised serious questions about tourist safety.
As per information, 24-year-old Suraj Basu, a resident of East Burdwan, had visited Mandarmani on Saturday with four friends. After booking a hotel room, they went for a swim in the sea.
According to local sources, Suraj was suddenly swept away by the surging waves. Before his friends could realize what was happening, he drowned in the deep water. The police were immediately informed and a search operation began, but despite two days of continuous searching, no success was achieved. Meanwhile, Suraj's family also arrived at Mandarmani and was constantly inquiring about the search. On Monday morning, local fishermen found a body caught in their nets. Upon identification, it was confirmed to be that of Suraj Basu. The police have sent the body to Kanthi Sub-Divisional Hospital. After post-mortem, the body will be handed over to the family.
Suraj Basu was an engineering graduate and worked for a private company in Kolkata. His family lives in the Ravindrapalli area of Bhatar in East Burdwan. His father is posted in the police department and his mother works in the health department.
After this incident, questions have again been raised about the safety arrangements for tourists at the beach. Locals say that tourists have died while bathing several times before, but security arrangements are still not being adequately improved. People are asking why tourists are not prevented from going to dangerous places even when the sea is rough.
However, East Medinipur District Police maintain that the beach is constantly monitored and tourists are repeatedly warned. But many tourists ignore the warnings and enter the surging waves, often resulting in extremely painful consequences.
