Hawaii, 24 November (H.S.): Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has entered its 37th eruptive episode in the past year, with scientists forecasting a period of high lava fountaining over the coming days . The dramatic spectacle, currently contained within the volcano's summit caldera, is drawing onlookers to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park to witness the raw power of creation.

A Fiery Display

The latest phase of activity began on Friday morning, with intermittent overflows of molten lava from two vents on the southwest margin of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported on Sunday that inflationary ground tilt continues to increase, signaling that magma is rising and building pressure for a more significant fountaining event, which is expected to occur between November 23 and 25 .

The previous episode on November 9 produced spectacular lava fountains reaching heights of up to 1,200 feet.

Monitoring and Hazards

The HVO is maintaining a Volcano Alert Level of WATCH and an Aviation Color Code of ORANGE, indicating that an eruption is underway with limited hazards . Currently, the lava flows do not pose a threat to any communities .The primary hazards associated with the eruption are airborne. High levels of volcanic gas, particularly sulfur dioxide (SO₂), can react in the atmosphere to create volcanic smog, or vog, which can cause respiratory issues downwind .

Scientists also warn of lightweight volcanic particles, such as Pele's hair (strands of volcanic glass), which can be carried for miles from the eruptive venture.

A Contained Spectacle

Since this series of eruptions began in December 2024, Kīlauea has provided a mesmerizing and generally safe display of volcanic activity. Park officials are directing visitors to designated viewing areas, where the dramatic glow of the lava lake and the spatter from the vents are clearly visible, especially at night.

While the eruption is a powerful reminder of nature's forces, for now, it remains a contained wonder within the national park, offering a unique glimpse into the geologic processes that shape the Hawaiian Islands.
