Lucknow,
24 Nov (HS): Yogi Adityanath on Monday praised Lachit Barphukan as a heroic
warrior who successfully defended his kingdom against the Mughals. In a post on
X, he mentioned, “Humble tributes to Lachit Barphukan, the great military
leader who defended our motherland and culture against the oppression of Mughal
invaders with remarkable courage and visionary strategy, on his birth
anniversary! Your life and sacrifice exemplify the ideal of Nation
First and are an inspiration for generations to come.”
In
his speech celebrating historical personalities and calling for a broader
curriculum in education, the UP Chief Minister recalled Lachit Barphukan, a
17th-century Assamese commander who fought against the Mughals. He has talked about Barphukan's bravery,
citing him as an example of a leader who emphasized people's well-being, and he
has pushed counterpart states to incorporate lessons of him into their
educational systems.
Advocacy
for a broader history curriculum: He cited Barphukan as an example to
illustrate the concept that historical personalities and tales other than a
chosen few should be taught in schools.
Connection to larger movements: His references
to Barphukan frequently coincide with larger attempts to establish a patriotic
narrative, as shown in celebrations commemorating Barphukan's 400th birthday.
