Chennai, 24 November (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has commenced preparatory work for the 2026 Assembly elections, choosing to prioritize alliance negotiations even as the state unit's organizational revamp continues to be delayed. The party is now actively shortlisting constituencies with high winning potential before finalizing appointments for various district unit presidents, which are planned for December 9.
State unit president K Selvaperunthagai confirmed on Sunday that a party delegation is scheduled to meet with the alliance leader, the DMK, next week to formally begin seat-sharing discussions. This proactive approach aims to give the party an assertive position as it seeks to strengthen its organizational presence in the state ahead of the electoral contest. The five-member coordination committee, recently constituted by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, met for the first time at the state headquarters to discuss their strategy and negotiation framework.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Selvaperunthagai clarified that while they are preparing a realistic and winnable list of constituencies, the party has not yet finalized the total number of seats it intends to seek from the DMK. Separately, Girish Chodankar, the AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge, asserted that the outcome of the Bihar election would not be repeated in Tamil Nadu, as the Congress is focused on strengthening its grassroots organization.
He confirmed that all district presidents would be appointed by December 9 and that senior leaders would soon begin touring the districts to gather ground reports and assess local unit strengths and weaknesses.
