Bay of Bengal Activity Intensifies, Prompting Heavy Rain Warning for Tamil Nadu

Chennai, 24 November (H.S.) : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu and several other southern regions as two separate weather systems intensify over the Bay of Bengal.

The primary concern is a well-marked low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea, which is highly likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal today, November 24.

Forecasters predict that this system will continue its west-northwest movement and could strengthen further into a full-fledged cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the subsequent forty-eight hours.

In addition to this major development, the IMD has indicated that a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form around November 25 over the Comorin and adjoining areas of the southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka.

Under the influence of these weather patterns, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to lash Tamil Nadu from November 22 through November 25.

The forecast warns that squally weather with wind speeds of forty to fifty kilometres per hour is expected along and off the Tamil Nadu coast, as well as over the Gulf of Mannar.

The weather office has strongly cautioned fishermen against venturing into the Andaman Sea and the affected parts of the Bay of Bengal due to rough sea conditions and high wind speeds.

Neighbouring states, including Kerala, Mahe, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are also under an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.
