Delhi, 24 November (H.S.):
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday paid tribute to the legendary 17th-century Ahom general, Lachit Barphukan, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, known as Lachit Divas. In his message, the Home Minister lauded him as one of the greatest warriors in Indian history, whose life serves as a lighthouse of inspiration for patriots.
In a post on the social media platform X, Shah praised Lachit Barphukan's unflinching patriotism, invincible valor, and unparalleled military leadership. He credited the general with shielding Assam and the Northeast from the onslaught of the Mughals and securing the region's rich cultural heritage.
Lachit Barphukan is celebrated for his strategic brilliance and courageous leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat. In this decisive naval battle fought on the Brahmaputra River near present-day Guwahati, the Ahom army, though outnumbered, secured a resounding victory over the Mughal forces led by Raja Ram Singh I.
This victory is considered a pivotal moment in the history of the region, as it successfully thwarted the expansion of the Mughal Empire into Assam and preserved the area's sovereignty and distinct cultural identity.
Lachit Barphukan's legacy continues to be a powerful symbol of resistance and valour in Indian history.
