Srinagar, 23 November (H.S.): CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam M.Y. Tarigami today urged the Government to reject the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) proposal seeking a 20 per cent increase in electricity surcharge.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event here, Tarigami said the move is unacceptable and goes against the promises made by the elected Government to the people.
“We do not want darkness. If you increase the fee, how will people use electricity? People must have the capacity to pay. The Government had promised relief and relaxation, but this proposal offers no respite,” he said.
Tarigami said incomes have already dipped and the purchasing power of the people has weakened significantly.
“You talk about peak-hour usage and paying extra for electricity during those hours. These recommendations are unfortunate and should not be entertained,” he added.
On the recent Delhi blast, Tarigami said that while the killing of innocent people must be condemned, suspicion against doctors should not be allowed to grow and there is a need to build trust.
“We condemn the killing of innocents, especially by a few individuals. Doctors have earned their place in this country. If one person makes a mistake, blaming the entire community is wrong and counterproductive. What we need is not suspicion but trust-building,” he said.
