Srinagar, 23 November (H.S.): Urging a people-centric approach, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today opposed the Government’s proposed 20 per cent increase in electricity tariffs terming the move “exorbitant and unjustified.”
Addressing a press conference here, PDP spokesperson Mohammad Iqbal Tramboo expressed serious concern over the “widespread distress” the proposal has triggered among the general public.
He said the decision reflects a “complete disconnect” of the administration from ground realities in J&K.
He described the proposal as “deeply insensitive” to the economic hardships faced by the people.
Tramboo said people are already grappling with inflation, erratic power supply, unemployment and economic instability, and imposing an additional financial burden in such circumstances is “unacceptable”.
“This tariff hike is harsh, anti-people and completely unwarranted. Instead of providing relief, the Government is choosing to add to the people’s misery. We urge the administration to withdraw this proposal immediately,” he said.
He added that the PDP will continue to stand with the public against measures that increase hardships and will raise the issue at every appropriate platform.
The party urged the Government to adopt a people-centric approach and prioritise policies that ease financial strain rather than intensifying it.
