Village assistant engaged in voter revision dies by suicide in Kallakurichi, probe ordered

Chennai, 22 November (H.S.): A thirty-seven-year-old woman village assistant in Kallakurichi district, Jakhitha Begum, died by suicide, prompting the police to launch a detailed investigation into the circumstances.

The deceased was actively involved in the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll at the Sivanarthangal Village Administrative Office. As part of her duties in recent days, she had been distributing voter verification forms and collecting the completed documents from residents.

According to a complaint lodged by her husband, Mubarak, with the Tirukkovilur police, the excessive pressure and workload associated with the intensive voter list revision drive were the primary factors that drove her to take this extreme step. The incident occurred on November twenty, when Jakhitha Begum returned home for lunch after completing her field duties. She was later found hanging from a swing chain by a relative. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Based on the husband's complaint, the police have registered a case. They are currently investigating the matter to determine whether the death was caused solely by the work pressure or if any other factors were involved.

Meanwhile, in response to the tragic incident, members of the Tamil Nadu Government Village Assistants' Association staged a protest in front of the Tirukkovilur Taluk Office.

The protestors demanded justice for Jakhitha Begum and called for immediate action against any individuals responsible for the alleged work-related pressure she may have faced.
