Mamata slams ECI after BLO’s death

Kolkata, 22 November (H.S.):

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep concern over the suicide of another BLO in Krishnanagar in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. The deceased BLO, Rinku Tarafdar, a primary school para-teacher working as a BLO in Part No. 201 of AC-82 Chapra, blamed the Election Commission in her suicide note before taking her own life. The Chief Minister also shared a copy of the suicide note in her post.

Mamata Banerjee said that the continued deaths of BLOs during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process are extremely worrying. She asked, How many more lives will be lost? How many more lives will be lost? How many more need to die for this SIR? How many more dead bodies shall we see for this process?

The Chief Minister described the incident as extremely horrific and alarming. She said that the increasing number of such incidents is a matter of deep concern for both the administration and society.

According to the state government, the deceased BLO was found dead at her residence in Krishnanagar. Preliminary investigations indicate she was under extreme stress during the SIR. Her family has also blamed the increasing workload on her.
