In a press conference on Friday, Pant confirmed the development and stated that a decision on Gill's replacement in the playing XI has been largely finalized and will be officially announced on Saturday.

I was informed on Thursday that I would be captaining, Pant told reporters. Shubman is recovering. He was keen to play, but his body didn't allow it. He also lauded Gill's commitment, adding, As a captain, you want a leader in the team who shows the spirit to play for the team even in difficult situations.

Gill has demonstrated exactly that, and it inspires the entire squad. With the 26-year-old Gill sidelined, Rishabh Pant is now set to become India's 38th Test captain.
