Gunmen open fire on tram employee in Baranagar


Kolkata, 21 November (H.S.): Two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle shot a tram depot employee who had gone out to dispose of garbage in Kolkata's Baranagar area early Friday morning. Fortunately, the bullet missed the target, but the team depot employee was injured by gunpowder shrapnel. The attackers fled the scene. The police arrived at the scene and launched an investigation.

According to police and local sources, the injured man has been identified as Vikash Majumdar, a resident of the Northern Park area of Baranagar Municipality and employed at the tram depot. At around 6:25 a.m. on Friday, he had gone out to dispose of household garbage as usual.

Allegedly, two youths on a motorcycle suddenly approached him and opened fire. The bullet missed, but Vikash was injured by shrapnel, falling to the road. The attackers, wearing helmets, fled towards the Belgharia Expressway after the shooting.

On information the police from Baranagar police station arrived at the scene, cordoned off the entire area, and began an investigation. Police are investigating all possible angles.

Footage from nearby CCTV cameras is also being examined to identify the attackers.

Local resident Keshav Chandra said, This incident has never happened here before. Vikash had come to throw garbage in the morning when the gunshots were fired. The young men on the bike were wearing helmets and immediately fled.

Another resident, Shantanu Majumdar, said, Vikash is a very calm person. It's hard to believe he had any dispute with anyone. He was injured by gunpowder shrapnel. The police are investigating.

Local Trinamool leader Subhashish Kar reacted, saying, Our area has always been peaceful. This incident is extremely shocking. A major accident could have occurred. We demand the administration thoroughly investigate the matter and take strict action against the culprits.
