UTTARKASHI, 21 November (H.S.): In a significant initiative to enhance connectivity in remote frontier areas, the Indian Army is set to inaugurate a community radio station in the border village of Harsil on November 24 as part of the central government's Vibrant Village Programme.
The District Information Officer confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday, detailing that the army is establishing the station to serve the region's marginal villages. The formal launch is scheduled for this coming Monday.
This project is expected to address critical communication gaps in the strategic border district.Community radio stations offer numerous advantages in such regions, primarily by disseminating vital information focused on local issues, helping preserve indigenous culture and traditions, and fostering strong community engagement.
By broadcasting in local languages, these stations ensure that information and educational content remain accessible, even in areas with high rates of illiteracy. The need for alternative communication channels was starkly highlighted during recent natural disasters.
For example, during the Dharali disaster on August 5 of this year, the collapse of road and communication networks left the entire area isolated, making communication among residents impossible. In such emergency scenarios, community radio stations become an invaluable asset for coordination and information dissemination.
This radio station is a key component of the central government's broader Vibrant Village Programme, which aims to comprehensively upgrade education, communication, and essential infrastructure, including television connectivity, in India's border villages.
