Bangkok, 21 November (HS): In a triumphant and dramatic conclusion to the 74th Miss Universe pageant, Mexico's Fátima Bosch was crowned the winner on Friday, besting over 100 contestants from around the globe. The 25-year-old from Tabasco, who has been celebrated for her resilience and grace, is the fourth woman from Mexico to win the coveted title.
The finale, held in Bangkok, Thailand, saw Praveenar Singh of Thailand named the first runner-up, followed by representatives from Venezuela, the Philippines, and Côte d'Ivoire. Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, Miss Universe 2024, passed the crown to a visibly emotional Bosch.
India's representative, Manika Vishwakarma, made it to the Top 12 but was eliminated following the swimsuit presentation.
A Victory Overcoming Adversity
Bosch's journey to the crown was anything but smooth, marked by a significant controversy that captured global attention. Days before the finale, Nawat Itsaragrisil, a director of the Thai host organization, publicly berated Bosch during a pre-pageant event, reportedly calling her dumb and criticizing her for an alleged absence from a sponsorship activity.
Bosch stood her ground, stating she represented Mexico with dignity and would not be silenced, an act that earned her widespread admiration .The confrontation escalated when fellow contestants, including the reigning Miss Universe, walked out of the event in a powerful show of solidarity .
The Miss Universe Organization swiftly condemned Itsaragrisil's malicious behavior, restricted his role in the pageant, and launched an investigation. Itsaragrisil later issued a tearful public apology for his actions.
A Voice for Empowerment
A graduate of fashion and apparel design, Bosch has been a passionate advocate for sustainable fashion and has spoken openly about her experiences with dyslexia, ADHD, and hyperactivity, transforming these challenges into her strengths.
During the final question-and-answer round, Bosch was asked about the challenges women face in 2025 and how she would use her platform to create a safe space for them. She answered confidently, We are here to speak up and make a change. We are women and brave ones that stand up, the ones that will make history.
For her final word, when asked how she would empower young girls, she replied, Believe in the power of your authenticity, believe in yourself, your dreams matter and your heart matters. Never let anyone make you doubt your worth, because you are worth everything .
The event was hosted by performer Steve Byrne, with performances by Thai singer Jeff Satur. The judging panel included Indian badminton legend Saina Nehwal in her first experience judging the prestigious pageant. Puerto Rico was announced as the host for the 75th anniversary edition of the pageant next year.
