Guwahati, 20 November (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlighted on social media a major agricultural breakthrough in Tamulpur district, where the state’s first ten solar irrigation pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme have transformed farming prospects in Baltipar village.

The district administration installed the pumps in May, turning previously unproductive farmland into cultivable fields. Using the SRI method, farmers have successfully produced crops for the first time on these lands, recording yields of 8.5–10 quintals per bigha during the recent harvest—an achievement termed “remarkable” by the Chief Minister.

Dr. Sarma said the initiative demonstrates how solar energy is reshaping rural livelihoods and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for guiding the state toward sustainable agricultural practices. He added that farmers who once struggled to manage a single crop are now confidently moving toward a second cropping cycle, marking a new chapter of rural prosperity.
