Delhi, 9 October (H.S.): The Congress party on Thursday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position on the latest developments in Gaza, terming it “shocking and deeply concerning.”
In a post on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that while Prime Minister Modi welcomed the recent progress in the Gaza peace process and praised US President Donald Trump for his role, what was truly surprising was his “unconditional admiration” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who, according to Ramesh, has been “waging a genocide in Gaza for the past twenty months.”
Ramesh further alleged that the Prime Minister has maintained “complete silence” on the future of a free and sovereign State of Palestine — a state that India officially recognised in November 1988 and which more than 150 countries have endorsed. He added that Modi had also avoided commenting on the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi recently welcomed the first phase of the US-brokered Gaza peace accord, describing it as a “step towards lasting peace” in the region. The agreement, announced by President Trump on Truth Social, marks the initial breakthrough in negotiations between Israel and Hamas after two years of conflict.
