Delhi, 5 October (H.S.): Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives caused by a bridge collapse in Darjeeling following heavy rains and landslides. The calamity has claimed at least 17 lives, according to preliminary reports, while rescue operations continue amid challenging terrain and persistent rainfall.
In a tweet posted on platform ‘X’, Vice-President Radhakrishnan stated:“Deeply anguished by the tragic loss of lives in the bridge mishap in Darjeeling following heavy rains and landslides. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
The disaster has been marked by massive landslides across Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, flattening homes, damaging roads, and isolating remote villages. The collapse of the Dudia Iron Bridge, a vital link connecting Mirik and Kurseong, has further hindered rescue and relief efforts. The region remains under red alert due to ongoing heavy rainfall, with authorities and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) engaged in rescue missions.
