New Delhi, 5 October(HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and widespread damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal, which triggered devastating landslides and flash floods.
At least 47 lives have been lost, with several others missing, mainly in the eastern districts of Nepal such as Ilam and Koshi Province. The relentless downpour disrupted transportation, washed away bridges, and left many communities isolated, as authorities race to conduct rescue operations amid continued rainfall.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi stated, “The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time. As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required.”
The severe monsoon rains since Friday caused multiple landslides, notably sweeping away several villages in Ilam district where 37 fatalities have been confirmed. Rescue workers are laboring to reach inaccessible areas on foot due to blocked roads, while the Nepali army has been deployed with helicopters and motorboats to aid in relief efforts.
The Koshi River, known for its destructive flooding history, surged beyond danger levels, prompting authorities to open sluice gates and plan restrictions on heavy vehicle movement over bridges.
The disaster coincides with the aftermath of Nepal’s biggest festival, Dashain, when many people travel to their native villages, complicating relief and evacuation efforts.
Domestic flights were suspended temporarily due to poor visibility, further hampering operations. The Government of Nepal declared public holidays to manage the crisis effectively and urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate.
Prime Minister Modi’s message underscores India’s unwavering support as Nepal battles this catastrophic natural event, reaffirming that India will extend all necessary assistance as a neighbour committed to humanitarian aid and disaster response.
