Kolkata, 4 October (H.S.).
At least ten devotees fell ill after consuming siddhi (a cannabis-based offering) during an idol immersion ceremony in Lodha village under Garbeta-I block of West Midnapore district on Saturday.
According to sources, the incident occurred after locals consumed siddhi prasad following the immersion ritual. Soon after, several people reportedly complained of nausea, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.
The affected individuals were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital with the help of local residents. Doctors said that the condition of two patients is critical, while others are under observation.
The health department has launched an emergency response and started treatment for all patients. Preliminary investigations suggest that the prasad may have been contaminated or prepared with toxic ingredients. Samples of the offering have been collected and sent for testing.
Police and health officials have visited the site and are closely monitoring the situation.
