Kolkata, 4 October (H.S.).
A woman teacher from Tamluk in East Midnapore, who had lost her job following the Supreme Court’s order cancelling the 2016 School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment panel, died at a Kolkata hospital on Friday night.
The deceased, identified as Arpita Das Maiti (35), had been serving as a teacher for Classes XI and XII at Daharpur Tapsili High School in Tamluk for the past seven years. Her employment was terminated after the apex court annulled the entire 2016 SSC recruitment panel, declaring all appointments made through it invalid.
As per court directions, those whose names appeared in the “tainted” list were barred from appearing in the new recruitment examinations. Family members claimed that Arpita’s admit card for the 2025 SSC recruitment test was also cancelled despite her application being accepted, which left her deeply distressed.
Her neighbour, Sujay Kumar Maiti, said, “After the court order, she was devastated. Her health began deteriorating soon after.” Arpita’s father-in-law, Nityananda Maiti, stated that she had been suffering from neurological complications and was undergoing treatment at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, where she passed away on Friday night.
Local councillor and former member of the school’s managing committee, Chanchal Khara, expressed grief over her death, saying, “She was well respected in the area as a dedicated teacher. Her passing is deeply saddening.”
