Muzaffarnagar,
04 Oct (HS): A criminal carrying a bounty of Rs. 1 lakh was killed in a
shootout between police and criminals in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, late
Friday night. A sub-inspector and a constable were injured. One of the
criminal's accomplices managed to escape and is being sought.

Rural Aditya Bansal said that the Budhana Kotwali and Shahpur police stations
were checking the Parsoli canal track late Thursday night. During this, two
young men were seen riding a motorcycle on the canal track. When the police
tried to stop them, they took off with the bike and ran away. The police chased
them and surrounded the criminals near an old, closed kiln near the Jaula canal
bridge, where they opened fire. Garhi Sakhawat outpost in-charge Lalit Kasana
and Aleem, posted at the Shahpur police station, were injured.
The
police returned fire, injuring one of the criminals, while his accomplice
managed to escape under cover of darkness. The injured criminal was taken into
custody by the police and admitted to the district hospital for treatment,
where doctors declared him dead.
Upon
learning of the incident, SSP Sanjay Kumar inspected the scene. He said that a
criminal was killed in a police encounter. He was identified as Mehtab (30), a
resident of Sonta Rasulpur village in Thana Bhawan, Shamli district. Police records
show that he has more than 18 cases against him for robbery, kidnapping,
attempted murder, and other crimes. A reward of one lakh rupees was announced
for him. The police recovered a 32-bore revolver, a 9mm pistol, cartridges, a
bike, three tolas of gold, and one kilogram of silver from the criminal.
