Prayagraj, 31
Oct (HS): A 50-year-old woman from Karchana, Prayagraj, had been suffering from
severe stomach pain for the past month. She initially sought treatment at a
private hospital in Karchana for three days, but received no relief. She was
then admitted to the surgery department of Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital on
October 6. A CECT scan performed during the examination revealed a
pseudopancreatic cyst in his abdomen, with a large walled-off necrosis. This
condition often occurs after acute pancreatitis, in which inflammation of the
pancreas causes fluid and dead tissue to form a sac-like structure.
If not
treated in time, it can lead to serious complications like infection, bleeding
or pressure on nearby organs which can have extremely serious consequences. In
such cases, surgery like laparoscopic cystogastrostomy is the only life-saving
solution, in which the cyst wall is connected to the stomach wall through a
tube without opening the stomach so that the fluid accumulated inside it can be
safely drained.
Given the
severity of the condition, Professor (Dr.) Vaibhav Srivastava, Head of the
Department of Surgery, performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and
laparoscopic cystogastrostomy simultaneously on October 16. Following the
operation, the patient was kept in the ICU for two days and then transferred to
the general ward. She is now completely healthy, eating a normal diet, and was
discharged on the tenth day after the operation.
Prof. (Dr.)
Vaibhav Srivastava's team included Dr. Tarun Kalra, Dr. Monica, Dr. Anmol, and
Dr. Nripendra. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Arvind Yadav, with Dr.
Akanksha and Dr. Shahnaz playing key roles. Dr. Vaibhav Srivastava stated,
This operation was quite challenging because the cyst had both necrosis
and chronic pancreatitis. Successfully handling such a complex case using laparoscopic
techniques is a matter of pride for the entire department. The patient is now
completely healthy and living a normal life.
