Norway, 3 October (H.S.): Mirabai Chanu, India’s acclaimed weightlifter, clinched a silver medal in the 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships in Førde, Norway, lifting a total of 199kg. The 31-year-old lifted 84kg in the snatch and an impressive 115kg in the clean and jerk, successfully completing all three attempts in the latter discipline.Chanu struggled initially in the snatch event, failing twice at 87kg, but regained composure to replicate her 115kg clean and jerk lift from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where she also won silver. This performance marks her return to international competition after the Paris 2024 Olympics and a prolonged break focused on recovery and training.

The gold went to North Korea’s Ri Song Gum, who shattered world records with a total lift of 213kg, including a clean and jerk of 122kg. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed bronze with a 198kg total.

Chanu’s silver is notable as she competed in a lower weight division, moving down from 49kg. With this achievement, she extended her impressive record at the World Championships, adding to her 2017 gold and 2022 silver medal performances.

Her chief coach remarked that the aim was to exceed a 200kg total, indicating strong prospects for future contests. This medal adds to India’s growing tally at the World Weightlifting Championships, reinforcing the nation’s stature in international weightlifting.
