Delhi, 29 October (H.S.): The Department of Telecommunications on Wednesday introduced a new, formalized process for transferring the ownership of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) SIM cards. This significant development allows consumers to switch service providers without experiencing any interruption to their services.

According to the Union Ministry of Communications, a lack of a standardized procedure for changing M2M SIM ownership previously existed. This regulatory gap frequently led to service disruptions when consumers or businesses needed to migrate to a new telecom provider.

The new framework is designed to ensure a smooth and efficient transition, preventing any service downtime. The new process requires the M2M service user to submit a written request to their current provider for the ownership transfer. Provided there are no outstanding dues, the existing provider must issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) within 15 days.

Subsequently, the new service provider will submit a declaration accepting all responsibilities, liabilities, and regulations tied to the transferred SIMs. The respective access service provider will then verify all documents, complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure, and officially update the SIM records.

The Ministry affirmed that this new protocol ensures every M2M SIM will remain connected to an authorized service provider at all times, guaranteeing continuous service for the consumer throughout the transfer process.
