SYDNEY, 29 October (H.S.): Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has bolstered hopes for a potential Ashes return after he was seen bowling in the nets on Wednesday, signaling a significant step in his recovery from injury.According to a report from Sky News Australia, the 32-year-old fast bowler is diligently working to regain full fitness.

Cummins has been sidelined from the first Ashes Test, scheduled to begin in Perth on November 21, due to a bone stress injury in his back. Cricket Australia has since confirmed that Steve Smith will assume captaincy duties for the opening match.

Smith's record as a stand-in captain has been exemplary, leading the team to five victories and one draw in his previous tenures. The official squad for the Perth Test is anticipated to be announced next week.

Cummins's participation in the second Test in Brisbane hinges on the outcome of a rigorous four-week bowling program designed to assess his match readiness. His potential comeback is a crucial development for the Australian side, given his formidable record against England.

The pacer has been a perennial challenge for England, claiming a remarkable 91 wickets over the last four Ashes series. He also finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2017–18, 2019, and 2021–22 campaigns. After making his international debut as a teenager in 2011, Cummins's early career was marred by recurring back injuries that kept him out of Test cricket for over five years. He made a spectacular return in 2017, firmly establishing himself as one of the world's premier fast bowlers.
