33 Blocks, 11 Urban Areas in Odisha Affected by Cyclone Montha: Minister Suresh Pujari

Bhubaneswar, 29 October (H.S.): Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Wednesday said that 33 blocks and 11 urban areas across the state have been affected by Cyclone Montha, which brushed past the Odisha coast after making landfall on Tuesday night.

Addressing a press conference, Pujari said the state government had undertaken extensive precautionary measures, including the evacuation of over 19,000 people from vulnerable areas to safe shelters before the cyclone’s impact.

He informed that the assessment of damages to houses, roads, and public infrastructure will commence from Thursday. “Preliminary reports suggest partial damage to several houses. Once detailed assessments are completed, the government will ensure timely compensation to all affected families,” Pujari stated.

Following a high-level review meeting, the Minister directed district Collectors to begin immediate damage assessments and submit their reports within 72 hours. He added that officers from unaffected districts would be deployed to assist in the process if required.

“Reports have already confirmed damage to several houses due to heavy rain and strong winds. Polythene sheets have been distributed to affected households as temporary shelter support. Simultaneously, crop loss assessment will also be carried out, and compensation will be released promptly after verification,” Pujari said, assuring that all concerned departments are actively engaged in restoration work and relief operations across the cyclone-hit areas.
