Delhi, 28 October (H.S.): The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to fix Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for key fertilizers for the upcoming Rabi 2025-26 season, earmarking a budget of approximately ₹37,952.29 crore. The decision, made in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is aimed at ensuring farmers have access to essential soil nutrients at affordable prices.

The approved subsidy will cover Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers for the six-month period from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. This budgetary allocation is roughly ₹736 crore higher than the amount approved for the 2025 Kharif season. This financial support ensures the stable and smooth availability of 28 grades of P&K fertilizers, including Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and various NPKS (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potash, Sulphur) grades .

The subsidy is disbursed directly to fertilizer manufacturers and importers, allowing them to sell these vital agricultural inputs to farmers at reasonable and subsidized prices. The government's action is a continuation of the NBS policy, which has been in effect since April 1, 2010.

The subsidy rates are determined by considering recent trends in the international prices of fertilizers and their raw materials, such as Urea, DAP, Muriate of Potash (MOP), and Sulphur. This rationalization of subsidies helps to insulate domestic farmers from global price volatility.
