Delhi, 28 October (H.S.): The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Central Pay Commission, paving the way for the next revision of pay and pension structures for government employees. The new pay scales are expected to come into effect from January 1, 2026.
The recommendations of the upcoming Pay Commission are set to benefit nearly 50 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners across the country.
According to the government, the commission will comprise one chairperson, one part-time member, and one member-secretary. It is mandated to submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its constitution.
The move aims to ensure periodic revision of pay and pension structures to align with economic conditions, inflation, and fiscal capacity, continuing the practice followed since the implementation of the 6th and 7th Pay Commissions.
