Kolkata, 21 October (H.S.):

Kolkata Police launched a special operation across the city to maintain law and order on the night of Kali Puja and Diwali. According to an official police report released Tuesday morning, a total of 640 people were arrested during the operation, which lasted from the night of October 20th to the morning of October 21st.

According to the police, 183 people were arrested for bursting banned firecrackers, while 451 were detained for causing a disturbance. Additionally, six people were arrested for gambling-related activities. The Police seized 852.45 kilograms of banned firecrackers and 68.4 liters of illicit liquor during this period. Officials said special vigilance was maintained throughout the city to maintain security and law and order during the festival.

Strict action was also taken against traffic violations. Traffic police issued a total of 882 challans on Diwali night. These include driving without a helmet, pillion riders without helmets, speeding, drunk driving, and other violations. According to the police, 331 drivers were found without helmets, while 180 were found without helmets. Similarly, charges were filed for speeding in 116 cases and drunk driving in 99 cases.

According to police sources, patrolling was increased throughout the city. Sensitive areas were monitored using drone cameras and CCTV. The Police Commissionerate said that any kind of disorder or chaos would not be tolerated during the festival. Officials claimed that law and order remained normal in the city and that adequate security arrangements were made at all major puja pandals and public places.
