Prayagraj,
20 Oct (HS): Diwali, the festival of lights has arrived; people are preparing
to burst firecrackers in abundance during this festival. If you too are
planning to burst large and loud firecrackers, be careful. Even a little
carelessness could result in getting caught in these loud fireworks.
Dr.
S.M. Abbas, senior optometrist at Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital (Colvin),
says that every year after Diwali, many people come to the hospital with eye
problems. Loud firecrackers are filled with various flammable substances and
sharp particles, which are released directly when they burn. If handled
carelessly, they can reach the eyes.
Dr.
Abbas explains that the eyes are a very delicate part, and even small particles
can affect them. Therefore, protect your face and eyes especially when lighting
firecrackers. Avoid going near firecrackers that don't explode after lighting
them. Sometimes, they can explode when you lean in to look at them or touch
them, which can be very dangerous. Keep a close eye on children while lighting
fireworks and ensure they are lit from a safe distance. Keep your face away
from them while lighting them! Celebrate Diwali with utmost caution to prevent
any kind of igniter from firecrackers. If firecracker gunpowder or other
flammable substances get into your eyes, immediately consult your nearest
doctor. Emergency doctors are available in all government hospitals. Do not rub
or scrub your eyes. Use plain antibiotic eye drops
(ciprofloxacin/moxifloxacin/gatifloxacin) or lubricant eye drops, remarked Dr.
S.M. Abbas, Senior Optometrist, Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital.
