Hooghly, 2 October (H.S.): A young man was killed and two others seriously injured in a road accident on Navami evening in Mogra police station area of Hooghly district. The incident occurred on the new bridge near Nandipukur.

According to local sources, three friends were returning from work on a scooter when a motor van was trying to climb the bridge from the opposite direction. The scooter and van collided violently.

Local people and passersby immediately rushed to the scene and rescued the injured and took them to Chuchura Imambara Sadar Hospital. Doctors there declared 26-year-old Abhishek Ram dead. The other two injured youths, Rajkumar Barai and Aamir Ansari, are undergoing treatment at the hospital. The trio were residents of the same neighborhood, Bad Khejuria Mallickpada, and worked at the same place.

On information, the police arrived at the scene.

Following the accident, locals have questioned the negligence of the traffic police and administrative apathy. They said that while the bridge is only permitted to travel towards Mitthapukur, people often violate the rules and come from the opposite direction. The area also lacks traffic police deployment, adequate lighting, and CCTV cameras. This is why accidents are occurring repeatedly.
