New Delhi, 2 October (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu today paid solemn homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary at Rajghat, New Delhi. On the occasion, she participated in the traditional Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha, a multi-faith prayer service that echoed Gandhi’s lifelong message of peace, unity, and harmony.
The President joined dignitaries and citizens in remembering the Father of the Nation, reflecting on his principles of truth and non-violence that continue to guide the country’s democratic values. Floral tributes were offered at the Samadhi, and prayers from various faiths were recited in reverence to Gandhi’s universal message of unity.
Later in the morning, President Murmu also visited Vijay Ghat to offer tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. Observing the solemn occasion, she commended Shastri’s enduring legacy of simplicity, integrity, and his rallying call of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”, which remains etched in India’s collective memory.
The dual observances at Rajghat and Vijay Ghat brought together national leaders, officials, and citizens, reaffirming the nation’s respect for two of its most revered figures.
Both Gandhi and Shastri’s birthdays, marked together on October 2, remain a day of reflection on the values of simplicity, courage, and service to the nation.
