Purba Medinipur, 2 October (H.S.): A massive fire broke out late Wednesday night at a shop in Mirjanagar, Teyari Mor area under Mayna police station limits in Purba Medinipur district, triggering panic among residents.

According to local traders, the shop contained handicraft items and textiles. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, spread rapidly and engulfed the premises within minutes.

Nearby residents and youths rushed to the spot and tried to douse the flames using water and sand. Their prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining shops and houses.

Although several items stored inside were destroyed, no casualties were reported. Eyewitnesses said the area was quickly filled with thick smoke, causing chaos among locals.

Police reached the site soon after being informed and took stock of the situation. However, residents expressed anger over the delayed arrival of the fire brigade.

Locals stated that had the fire not been contained in time, it could have caused extensive damage to the nearby establishments.
