Chennai, 19 October (H.S.) : A case has been registered against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Chief Coordinator Seeman for allegedly making provocative and objectionable statements during an interview with a YouTube channel in November of the previous year.
The remarks, which concerned the judiciary, legislature, and Parliament, quickly drew criticism for allegedly undermining the constitutional institutions of the country.
The legal action stems from a complaint filed by lawyer Charles Alexander, who accused Seeman of attempting to incite discord and disrespect towards the nation's democratic structures.
After the police initially failed to act, Alexander approached the Egmore Magistrate Court, and subsequently the Madras High Court on appeal after his plea was dismissed.
The Madras High Court intervened, observing that Seeman’s remarks appeared prima facie to be inflammatory in nature and capable of causing public unrest. The High Court directed the concerned police authorities to register a case. Acting on this directive, the Thirumangalam Police have filed a case against Seeman.
The NTK chief has been booked for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, or other identity, and making statements likely to disturb public peace and harmony.
Police sources have confirmed that an investigation is underway to examine the full transcript and video of the interview to determine the deliberate intent behind the statements, and appropriate action will be taken upon its completion.
