R.G. Kar Protest Leader Dr. Tapas Pramanik Resigns from Medical Service

Kolkata, 17 October (H.S.). Dr. Tapas Pramanik, Emergency Medical Officer at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital and a prominent face of the protest movement following the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, has resigned from medical service.

This marks the second resignation this week from among officers associated with the R.G. Kar movement. Earlier, former Deputy Superintendent of R.G. Kar Medical College, Dr. Akhtar Ali, had also resigned, alleging administrative harassment for raising concerns over financial irregularities within the state’s healthcare system.

Dr. Ali, who was last posted as Deputy Superintendent at Kaliaganj State General Hospital in North Dinajpur district, stated in his resignation letter that he faced “sustained administrative persecution” after exposing corruption in the state’s health administration, including R.G. Kar.

In his resignation letter, Dr. Tapas Pramanik cited “continued administrative failure and intolerable working conditions” as the reasons behind his decision. He mentioned that despite repeated appeals to the R.G. Kar administration to post medicine and chest specialists for night duties in the emergency department, his requests were consistently ignored.

He wrote, “This situation has persisted for over a year. The constant administrative neglect and heavy workload have seriously affected my physical and mental health. It has now become impossible to continue working under such conditions.”

Earlier this week, after tendering his resignation, Dr. Akhtar Ali told the media that he had reached the limits of his fight against a “corrupt system.” He said, “I can no longer continue this battle from within the service, but my struggle against the corruption in the state’s health system will go on.”

It may be recalled that based on Dr. Akhtar Ali’s petition, the Calcutta High Court had last year ordered a CBI probe into a multi-crore financial scam at R.G. Kar Medical College. Following the investigation, the CBI arrested several individuals, including the college’s former controversial principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who remains in judicial custody.
