Mirzapur, 17 Oct (HS): Sundaram Upadhyay, a wanted
inter-district thief and arms smuggler, was injured in a shootout between
police and criminals in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, during wee hours. Police
apprehended the accused in the encounter, which occurred near Umaria Ayodhya
Prasad Mod in the Padri police station area. A pistol, a revolver, two live
cartridges, one empty cartridge, a Bullet motorcycle, and Rs.
700 in cash were recovered from his possession.
According to reports, the Padri police, Special Operations Group
(SOG), and surveillance team, led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Nagar and
Superintendent of Police (CO) Sadar, were jointly checking suspicious vehicles.
Meanwhile, an informant reported that wanted criminal Sundaram Upadhyay was
approaching from Jhingura Road with illegal weapons. When police surrounded him,
the accused opened fire to avoid arrest. In retaliation, police fired in
self-defense, striking Upadhyay in the leg.
The injured criminal was taken under police custody to the
Primary Health Center at Padri, where doctors referred him to Sadar Hospital. According
to doctors, his condition is reported to be normal. SP City Ritesh Singh said
that the arrested accused was wanted in a case registered at the Padri police
station. Following the recovery and arrest, the police have initiated further
legal action against him.
