Kolkata, 17 October (H.S.) — As the southwest monsoon begins to withdraw from India, dry and cool northwesterly winds have started advancing toward West Bengal. The clash between these opposing wind systems is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall in parts of both North and South Bengal over the weekend, just ahead of Kali Puja.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, while the weather will remain mostly dry across the 12 districts of South Bengal, scattered showers are expected in the coastal areas of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, and in parts of North 24 Parganas. In North Bengal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri districts are also likely to experience rain.

Weather officials stated that the southwest monsoon has already withdrawn from most parts of the country, except for some regions in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, where monsoon conditions still persist.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of the Indian Ocean. Meteorologists believe it may gradually intensify into a low-pressure area. However, since the system is forming far from Bengal, it is unlikely to have a direct impact on the state’s weather.

The rainfall is expected to remain mild, with cloudy skies over Kolkata, while most districts of South Bengal are likely to experience clear and pleasant weather during the festive weekend.
