Emergency doctor quits RG Kar over unbearable working conditions

Kolkata, 17 October (H.S.): Dr. Tapas Pramanik, Emergency Medical Officer at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who became a prominent figure in the movement surrounding the RG Kar rape and murder case, has resigned from the health service.

This is the second resignation of an official associated with the RG Kar movement this week. Earlier this week, Dr. Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, also resigned. He is known as a whistleblower for raising his voice against financial irregularities at the prestigious institution.

Dr. Akhtar Ali, whose last posting was as Deputy Superintendent at Kaliaganj State General Hospital in North Dinajpur district, alleged in his resignation letter that he was subjected to continuous administrative harassment after speaking out about financial irregularities in the state's health system, including at RG Kar.

Dr. Tapas Pramanik wrote in his resignation letter that he took this step due to continuous administrative failure and unbearable working conditions. He stated that he had repeatedly demanded the deployment of specialist doctors from the Medicine and Chest departments during night duty in the emergency department, but the RG Kar administration ignored his appeals.

He wrote, This situation has persisted for the past year. The administration's continued failure and excessive workload have severely impacted my health and mental state. It has now become impossible to work in this situation.

This week, Dr. Akhtar Ali, after resigning, told the media that he had reached the limits of his fight against the corrupt system. He said, I can no longer continue this fight while in service, but my struggle against the state's corrupt healthcare system will continue.
