Delhi, 15 October (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as “a towering statesman” and “a cherished friend of India.”

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he had known Odinga closely since his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and noted that their association deepened over the years.

Highlighting Odinga’s affinity for India, the Prime Minister wrote that the Kenyan leader had a special affection for India’s culture, values, and ancient wisdom, which was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India–Kenya ties. “He had a special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom,” the Prime Minister said, adding that Odinga consistently championed closer cooperation between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also recalled Odinga’s admiration for Ayurveda and India’s traditional medicine systems, referencing the “positive impact” they had on his daughter’s health.

PM Modi extended “deepest condolences” to Odinga’s family, friends, and to the people of Kenya “in this hour of grief.”Raila Odinga, a veteran of Kenyan public life, served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and remained one of the country’s most influential political figures.

Over decades, he played a central role in Kenya’s democratic politics and maintained close ties with India, engaging across trade, healthcare, and people-to-people exchanges.

India and Kenya share a historically warm relationship rooted in a sizable diaspora, robust commercial links, and cooperation across maritime security, education, and health. Odinga’s outreach and advocacy helped sustain the momentum of this partnership, with frequent high-level interactions underpinning bilateral ties.
