Burdwan, 15 October (H.S.): The Police have arrested a woman and her mother in connection with the theft of a newborn from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. The arrested women have been identified as Rinki Khatoon alias Rumki Khatoon and Manira Bibi. Both were arrested on Tuesday night.

Notably on Tuesday, the child's mother, Salefa Khatoon, had brought her newborn son to the hospital's outdoor to consult a doctor. The mother and grandmother were sitting with the child on the veranda of the maternity ward when a woman came and took the child in her lap, offering to pet him for a while. Suddenly, the woman fled with the child.

Following the incident, the child's mother raised hue and cry, causing a commotion in the hospital premises. The police immediately began an investigation into the matter.

The matter came to light when news of the child's theft was reported in local media. Following this, people in Rinki Khatoon's area became suspicious because they had seen her with a child. Neighbors went to Rinki's rented house in Uttarpara, East Burdwan district, and inquired.

A senior police officer said, Rinki Khatun tried to mislead the neighbors, but they became suspicious. They then informed the police.

On information, the police from Burdwan police station arrived at the scene and recovered the child safely. Both women were arrested on charges of child theft.

The police said they were investigating the motive behind the theft.

The child has been readmitted to the maternity ward of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
