Nagpur, 14 Oct (HS): More than 150 women lawyers from the Nagpur Bench
of Bombay High Court have demanded mandatory reservation for women candidates
in the coming elections of the High Court Bar Association, scheduled for
November 28. The appeal by women lawyers come in the wake of the Supreme Court
directives mandating reservation for women in bas associations across the
country.
In a detailed representation submitted on Monday to the President,
Secretary of the HCBA and the Election Officer. The women lawyers have demanded
rescheduling the elections announced on October 1, convening a general body
meeting to pass a resolution relating to reservation for women lawyers in the
HCBA polls
Earlier, another group of women lawyers had sought introduction of the ‘One
bar, one vote’ principle by amending the constitution of the Association.
Quoting the SC judgement in SC Bar Association versus B D Kaushik, demand for
at least one-third representation of women in the executive committees and to
reserve one office-bearer’s post such as treasurer, exclusively for women on a
rotational basis.
