Nagpur, 14 Oct (HS): More than 150 women lawyers from the Nagpur Bench

of Bombay High Court have demanded mandatory reservation for women candidates

in the coming elections of the High Court Bar Association, scheduled for

November 28. The appeal by women lawyers come in the wake of the Supreme Court

directives mandating reservation for women in bas associations across the

country.

In a detailed representation submitted on Monday to the President,

Secretary of the HCBA and the Election Officer. The women lawyers have demanded

rescheduling the elections announced on October 1, convening a general body

meeting to pass a resolution relating to reservation for women lawyers in the

HCBA polls

Earlier, another group of women lawyers had sought introduction of the ‘One

bar, one vote’ principle by amending the constitution of the Association.

Quoting the SC judgement in SC Bar Association versus B D Kaushik, demand for

at least one-third representation of women in the executive committees and to

reserve one office-bearer’s post such as treasurer, exclusively for women on a

rotational basis.
