New Delhi, October 11(HS): India put on a commanding batting display on the first day of the second Test against West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium, reaching 318 for two at stumps on Friday. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten on a brilliant 173 off 253 balls, looking poised to notch his third career double hundred in Test cricket.
Jaiswal was ably supported by Shubman Gill, who scored a composed 20 runs, while Sai Sudharsan contributed a crucial 87 before falling to West Indies’ left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who took both wickets for 60 runs. Indian batsmen showcased aggressive strokeplay, hitting boundaries to all corners of the ground on a flat pitch.
Reflecting on his innings, Jaiswal said he focused on building long partnerships and expressing himself calmly at the crease rather than rushing. “I wasn’t thinking about making runs; I took my time and enjoyed the process,” he said, adding his hunger for bigger scores remains strong.India, leading the two-match series 1-0, elected to bat after winning the toss and fully justified the decision with their dominance on Day 1.
West Indies must regroup and find more support for Warrican if they are to challenge India in the remaining days. The match continues Saturday with Jaiswal and Gill at the crease, as India look to build an imposing first-innings total and extend their series lead.
