Washington DC, October 11(HS): The White House has sharply condemned the Nobel Committee for awarding the 2025 Peace Prize to Venezuelan pro-democracy activist María Corina Machado instead of US President Donald Trump. The Committee recognized Machado for her relentless efforts promoting democratic rights in Venezuela, while the Trump administration expressed disappointment, accusing the Nobel panel of putting politics over peace.
President Trump, widely known for his aspirations to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, has taken credit for brokering several global ceasefires and peace deals, including a significant multi-stage truce in Gaza announced just days before the Nobel announcement.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung praised Trump as the peace president who continues to make peace deals, end wars, and save lives.Despite lobbying efforts and endorsements from various world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Nobel Committee proceeded with honoring Machado, who dedicated the prize to both the Venezuelan people and President Trump for his support.
Critics note that the Nobel nomination deadline fell days after Trump resumed office, potentially limiting consideration of his recent achievements. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s controversial domestic policies and international posture have sparked debate over his suitability for the award.
The Nobel Committee’s Peace Prize traditionally recognizes leaders advocating for arms control, democracy, and human rights. Four US presidents have previously received the honour, with Barack Obama the only recipient awarded while in office.
