Chicago, October 11(HS): Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the revered chaplain of Loyola University Chicago’s men’s basketball team who captured hearts nationwide with her unwavering support and infectious spirit, has passed away at the age of 106.

Sister Jean was a steadfast presence during the Ramblers' first national championship win in 1963 and achieved worldwide fame decades later, especially during the team's remarkable 2018 NCAA tournament run when she was 98 years old.

Known for her vibrant sidelines encouragement, spiritual guidance, and keen basketball insights, Sister Jean became a beloved figure across college basketball and beyond, drawing praise from former President Barack Obama and inspiring thousands. Loyola’s president, Mark C. Reed, described her as “an invaluable source of wisdom and grace” whose spirit profoundly touched generations of students and staff alike.alike

Born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on August 21, 1919, she embraced religious life at age 18 and devoted her career to education before joining Loyola as an academic adviser and later team chaplain in 1994. Beyond basketball, Sister Jean was a community pillar who led prayer groups and created initiatives connecting students with local assisted living residents.residents

Her contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis on her 100th birthday, as well as commendation from President Joe Biden on her 105th.

Sister Jean’s life story remains a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of community, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
